Is it your tradition to have one big house project each year? If so, maybe this summer's project is a deck installation. Perhaps you are expecting out-of-town company, or maybe you are planning to do a lot of outdoor entertaining. Either way, a deck would certainly add to the fun.
Do you already have your deck plan completed? Maybe you are looking for ideas. If so, keep reading for some ideas that might help you as you design your deck.
Consider How The Deck Will Be Used - Besides using the new deck for simply being with friends and family, which activities will make the deck exactly what you want? Think of making a sketch of what you want your deck to look like.
For instance, do you want an outdoor kitchen as part of the deck's design? Perhaps you have always wanted a hot tub. Would the deck be a good place for you to install one? Maybe you are into studying the night skies. If so, maybe a special section for a high-intensity telescope should be included in the deck's design. Will your deck be on an incline that overlooks gorgeous scenery? If so, you will probably want a fence as part of the deck installation.
Choose The Flooring And The Furniture - Once you have decided exactly how you will be using the deck, meet with deck installers who will do the job for you. They will be happy to look at your sketch and give you ideas on how to make it work.
If you decide to use hardwood for the deck's flooring, the installers will have the knowledge to tell you what kind of wood will work best for your deck. Maybe you had a firm idea of how you wanted the deck to be used, but you didn't know what kind of design would work best for that. In that case, the contractor will show you different shapes that will work best on the part of your property that will be used for the deck. If you do include a fence, the contractor might suggest that you use a different material, such as wrought iron, to add contrast to the deck's design.
Think about the furniture you will use on your deck. For instance, if you'll be serving meals there, you'll want a table and chairs. Think of having rocking chairs and maybe even a hanging swing as part of the deck's furniture.
