Looking to run new plumbing lines through your business to replace the ones made with galvanized steel, but not looking forward to the cost of replacement? PEX plumbing can be an affordable way to get this job done. Not only is there less labor involved due to not needed to solder sections together, but the PEX material itself is also cheaper. Here's more information about the different types of PEX plumbing that could be used in your business.
Non-Barrier PEX
The most affordable form of PEX is non-barrier PEX, which comes in both blue and red colors to help differentiate between hot and cold plumbing pipes. This type of pipe doesn't have any external layers or coatings, so it really is like the basics of PEX plumbing. This type of PEX will be the easiest way to make the switch from galvanized steel plumbing since it can be used in many open-type heating systems.
Non-barrier PEX is compatible with standard PEX fittings, so it can connect to existing valves and pumps that you have. It can also be used for drinking water, meaning that it will be safe to use no matter where the water is flowing.
Oxygen Barrier PEX
You can identify oxygen barrier PEX pipes by the look. It has a shiny coating that makes it stand out from the other pipes. Oxygen barrier PEX tubing is mainly used for heating systems and has a polymer coating on the outside of the pipe that prevents oxygen molecules from passing through the pipe. It is commonly used for radiant in-floor heating systems, getting water to radiator heating systems, and even for melting snow and ice by running water lines underneath cement.
Aluminum Barrier PEX
What makes the aluminum barrier PEX unique is the layer of aluminum found between the outer and inner layers of the pipe. It gives this type of PEX memory retention, which allows you to form the tubing into specific shapes. The aluminum barrier will serve two main purposes, with it mainly making the job of installing PEX alone much easier. The aluminum barrier also provides oxygen diffusion similar to oxygen barrier PEX. Why not use aluminum barrier PEX instead? Because that layer of aluminum is going to make the PEX pipes much more expensive than the other two options, though it may be the best PEX for your specific needs.
